It had been a tough but gratifying six week, fourteen city tour for me and the band. I'm Johnny A-Train of the Loco-Motions, perhaps you've got one of our CD's. It was 2 a.m. when we finished unloading the tour bus, back home in New Orleans, I'd missed a call and played back this voicemail:
what it mean ta be / someone like me to see
poppin the crew with sass / bein badass crass
likin the road / carry the load
yell down on me soon fool / kool/
need a rescue / from a miscue
there a cap wit my name / life ain't the same
I laughed at first to hear my rapper buddy Mess Dupp rhyming to me, until the last two lines got serious. According to him, someone out there had a bullet with his name on it, and he was in trouble.
Mess Dupp’s real name is Malcom Hines. He was a Julliard schoolmate of mine, an amazing classical pianist who turned back to keyboards, drums, and hip hop vocals after graduation.
Fiona Kerr, is Scotland born of Landed Gentry. Her title is: Maid of Loch Kerr Estate, and she is the Heir Apparent to the Lairdship. Fiona was also a Julliard schoolmate of mine and is a world renowned concert violinist, who has of late adopted Bluegrass and Appalachian Folk music as her passion.
Malcom and Fiona’s chosen passions for their music and for each other has brought turbulence and death to their relationship. Convoluted circumstances in this bigoted world led them to reach out to me rather than the authorities. We become entangled with New York's Hip Hop Police and Scotland Yard, each with their own bias.
